Lowtide
Lowtide produce music which both reflects and refracts reality. Extremely visual in nature, their music exists in a kind of emotional pre-dawn. Its half-lit sound speaks of both isolation and inclusion and manages the rare feat of sounding paradoxically distant and cool while still retaining a beautiful intimacy and warmth.
This tonal and expressive balance is perfectly encapsulated on their debut two track single. Title track “Underneath Tonight” is driven by pulsing bass and drums while Gabriel Lewis’ intricately effected guitar revolves around the vocals of Lucy Buckeridge and Giles Simon, their voices by turns plaintive and hopeful.
The second track, “Memory No. 7”, is a slower yet no less affecting track, held together by a loose beat and a swirl of narcotic guitars. This track also brings to the fore one of Lowtide’s greatest strengths; despite the atmospheric and seemingly other-worldy sound, at its core, the structure is essentially that of a standard pop song.
Originally known as Three Month Sunset and centred around the solo workings of Gabriel Lewis, the band cautiously awoke in 2005.
2007 saw Gabriel win www.ainr.com's Artist In Residency competition judged by Sigur Rós, Flood and Alan Moulder. Renamed Lowtide, the band's sound evolved from a single ambient, soaring, textured guitar into the band's current, larger configuration.
Lewis' guitar remains collectively transmitted by way of several amplifiers but is now framed by Lucy Buckeridge, Anton Jakovljevic (The Morning After Girls) and Giles Simon (The Sun Blindness). This addition of drums, dual bass and female/male vocals further emphasise the original dynamics, but also widen the aural spectrum.
In 2010, the band released an EP (You Are My Good Light) to a sold out crowd at Cherry Bar and have played with the likes of A Place To Bury Strangers, Steve Kilbey (The Church) & Ricky Maymi (Brian Jonestown Massacre).
Lowtide recently travelled to New Zealand where they were invited to play two sets at the wonderful Campus a Low Hum Festival in February 2011, sharing the stage with the likes of Caribou, My Disco and Toro Y Moi, as well as playing at Applecore Backyard Festival.
Lowtide will be going into live hiatus for the second half of 2011 while they concentrate on writing their debut album, due to be released in 2012.
